Our journey begins with an early morning departure from Cusco, heading toward the Huacarpay Wetlands, a tranquil haven of reeds and open waters. Here, we’ll spot the Bearded Mountaineer, Rusty-fronted Canastero, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Streak-fronted Thornbird, Darwin’s Nothura, and Giant Hummingbird, among others.

Next, we visit Laguna Ampatunes, a dazzling lake surrounded by towering peaks. This site hosts iconic species such as the Andean Hillstar, Giant Coot, Crested Duck, Andean Ibis, and Andean Negrito. We'll enjoy a healthy picnic lunch in the area.

In the afternoon, we explore Culebrayoc, a lesser-known gem of mid-elevation cloud forest. Target species here include the elusive Green-and-white Hummingbird, Black-eared Hemispingus, and Capped Conebill.

We wake up at Kuporo Lodge, nestled in the pre-Amazonian hills—an ideal location to explore a mosaic of habitats.

The surrounding forest is home to remarkable species like the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, Wire-crested Thorntail, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Amazonian Umbrellabird, American Pygmy Kingfisher, and Brown-winged Schiffornis.

In the afternoon, we climb to the higher-elevation Capire sector. This cloud forest zone reveals another avian cast, including Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet, and Fasciated Tiger Heron.

After breakfast, we head uphill to Kusiyachayoc, located at around 3,100 meters above sea level, to explore a new high-elevation birding zone. This area is home to a distinctive set of montane forest species, and we'll be on the lookout for highlights such as the Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Superciliaried and Three-striped Hemispingus, Urubamba Antpitta, Blue-backed Conebill, and Mountain Wren. With luck and patience, we may also encounter two elusive species: Diademed Tapaculo and the Marcapata Spinetail.

In the late afternoon, we visit Lek 167, where the dazzling Andean Cock-of-the-Rock performs its unforgettable courtship display—a vibrant spectacle of color, sound, and motion deep in the cloud forest.

Today, we embark on a river safari along the Araza River, one of the most biodiverse stretches of Amazonian cloud forest.

Target species include Sunbittern, Sand-colored Nighthawk, Brazilian Teal, Black Skimmer, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, and Blue-and-yellow Macaw. The slow boat pace allows immersive observation and fantastic photography.

We’ll also explore riverbank trails, listening for mixed flocks of tanagers and flycatchers.

We start in the San Lorenzo sector, where the shaded trails reveal treasures like Koepcke’s Hermit and Cabani’s Spinetail.

Then we travel to Puerto Maldonado, where we board a boat up the Tambopata River, watching for Capped Herons, Horned Screamers, and colorful macaws along the way.

Upon arrival at Finca Sachavacayoc, we may enjoy a short dusk birding walk with possibilities of spotting Spectacled Owl and Potoos.

At dawn, we head to the Chuncho Clay Lick, a dazzling spectacle where Red-and-green and Blue-headed Macawscongregate in the hundreds.

Along the way, we might see Orinoco Geese, Horned Screamers, and other rainforest wonders.

After lunch and a rest, we explore Tres Chimbadas Lake, where the shimmering waters reveal Hoatzins, Rufescent Tiger-Herons, and Wattled Jacanas.

At sunrise, we climb the canopy tower for sweeping views and excellent birding—White-throated Toucans, Plum-throated Cotingas, and mixed flocks await.

After breakfast, we hike the Condenado Trail, rich in biodiversity. Notable species include Razor-billed Curassow, Western Striolated Puffbird, Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant, and Musician Wren.

In the afternoon, we glide across Condenado Lagoon and, at twilight, set off on a final birding walk in search of the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl and Nightjars echoing through the dusk.

Early risers can return to the canopy tower for one final glimpse of the rainforest awakening, with chances to spot Laughing Falcons, Plumbeous Kites, and Chestnut-fronted Macaws.

After breakfast, we cruise down the river back to Puerto Maldonado, keeping our binoculars ready for any last sightings along the way.
